Christmas Countdown

Sunday 4th December

    – Consider setting aside just 1 clear hour this weekend to shop online. At the end of the weekend you’ll feel like a whole load has been lifted off your shoulders, and your lists, and you haven’t even stepped outdoors! You can do all that comparative price checking, and sift through a range of stuff without elbowing through harried crowds.

    – Today is the day to sit down and think out a menu. Not for Christmas day but for the whole of this week. Believe it or not, if you do plan before hand and make a simple concise shopping list, you will get through shopping and later, cooking in almost half the time. And right now, more than ever, time is what you want.

    – If you’re going to be doing a stuffed fowl for Christmas Day, plan ahead. You can actually start your stuffing now! Some things should never be on Christmas shopping lists, and that list starts with canned gravy, dry gravy packets, and packaged stuffing mix. It’s shameful to pay for these items when they can be assembled free from most family kitchens. Here’s how…
Start tossing the last few stale slices of your daily bread loaf into a tray in the oven. Turn the oven on for just five minutes, and then leave the bread there to dry out. Next day, take out yesterday’s bread, put it into a zipper storage bag, and put today’s bread in and repeat the 5 minutes of oven time. Dried out bread doesn’t get stale and different kinds of bread mixed together actually improve the taste!
To make the dressing, roll a rolling pin over the bread-filled zipper bag till it looks like the store-bought variety. Add sauteed onions and celery, and season with sage, parsley, salt, pepper — or just about anything your family likes. Moisten with chicken broth, milk or water, and voila! there’s your homemade turkey stuffing!

    – Apart from that, this is the day of rest. So rest, relax and try not to think of what you’re going to do tomorrow !
